SIDDHIS, OFTEN TRANSLATED AS "PERFECTIONS," "ACCOMPLISHMENTS," OR SUPERNORMAL POWERS
They are abilities described in ancient yogic and Hindu texts like Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. They represent heightened human potentials that emerge from deep spiritual practices, rather than being seen as magical or divine interventions.
These powers are considered natural extensions of consciousness and are categorized into various types, with some traditions listing eight primary ones (Ashta Siddhis) and others expanding to 25 or more. The eight major siddhis include:
ANIMA: The ability to become as small as an atom or reduce one's size at will
MAHIMA: The power to expand one's size to immense proportions
GARIMA: Making oneself infinitely heavy.
LAGHIMA: Becoming weightless or levitating.
PRAPTI: Attaining or reaching anything desired, regardless of distance.
PRAKAMYA: Fulfilling any wish or desire effortlessly.
ISHITVA: Supreme dominion or control over nature and beings.
VASHITVA: The ability to subjugate and control others' minds.
Beyond these, Patanjali outlines around 25 siddhis grouped into clairvoyance (e.g., knowledge of past/future lives, telepathy, clairaudience), psychokinesis (e.g., invisibility, mastery over elements, altering matter), and mind-body control (e.g., superhuman strength, freedom from hunger/thirst, radiant energy). Some sources mention up to 28 or more, including minor abilities like understanding animal languages or foreknowledge of events
